DIY Discs: Roxborough Library

Come cut your own 7" record and design a unique album cover!

Roxborough Library is excited to welcome Consonant Collective for a DIY Discs Record Cutting Workshop. Spots are limited, so register now!

What you'll make: 1 7" record, with up to 5 minutes of audio per side. Due to time constraints, you will likely have one side with content, the other side blank. This record is cut at 33 1/3 RPM. There will be supplies to design your own album art on a paper sleeve.

What to bring: Please have your audio file available in a .mp3 or .wav format. Feel free to email it in advance - the email address will be provided once you sign up.

REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED! Due to time constraints, we are only able to make 15 records in a session- they are cut in real time, so 5 minutes of music is 5 minutes of cutting! By getting an Eventbrite ticket, you are reserving your materials and 5 minutes of time to cut on the lathe cutter.

Sold out? Add your name to the waitlist.

Can't make it? Email lutzc@freelibrary.org to free up your spot.

DIY Discs: Parkway Central

We've been having a lot of fun listening to records at Library Mixtape. Have you ever wanted to try making your own?

This is the 4th in a series of 12 workshops in partnership with Consonant Collective. We will be meeting approximately once a month through August 2026 to make records together. See end of description for full list of workshop dates.

"Consonant is an arts collective based in Philadelphia that runs a record label and a micro-press. Its founding members are Katie and Joe, a married couple, and we frequently collaborate with friends and co-conspirators in the U.S. and abroad. We aim to put out high-quality DIY releases that maintain a feeling of fun and whimsy."

These workshops will mostly meet on second Wednesdays of the month, from 5:30-7:30PM. During each session, we'll be getting acquanted with Katie & Joe, learning about the vinyl production process, listening to some library-owned albums, and cutting our own! If you don't get a chance to make a record on the first workshop, keep an eye out for more dates!

What you'll make: 1 7" record, with up to 5 minutes of audio per side. Due to time constraints, you will likely have one side with content, the other side blank. This record is cut at 33 1/3 RPM. There will be supplies to design your own album art (on a paper sleeve).

This event is SOLD OUT! We are pre-booked until July. Eventbrite tickets for 7/8 and 8/12 session will go live after our 6/10 session.

Poetry Records at Swarthmore College

The Consonant Collective will lead a class of poetry students through the process of creating their own vinyl records using a refurbished ~1947 Rek-O-Kut Challenger record maker. This machine, created for use by music studios and pressing plants, uses a sapphire embossing stylus to create the record's grooves, literally pushing the music into the disc. We will first talk about the science behind vinyl records, from audio recording to vinyl pressing, and then each student will record their poetry to a 7” disc.

Cat Party! Book Release Party

Philly writer Katie Haegele has been putting out her beloved Cat Party! zine series for 7 years — and now it’s turned into a book! This diverse, lively anthology, published by Microcosm Publishing, collects every issue of the zine plus brand new contributions made especially for the book. More than 50 artists contributed essays, comics, portraits, song lyrics, and photos, all about the beloved cats in their lives, and the pieces range from heartbreakingly personal to totally whimsical (and everything in between).

Come celebrate the release of this beautiful book! You’ll be able to buy your copy before it’s available in stores, get yourself some cat-themed merch (including records with original music by contributor Joe Carlough!), and hang out while enjoying our catty playlist. It’s gonna be a blast!
